100-Calorie Snack Pack Alternatives

I know that sometimes when you're in a rush and on the go it can be very tempting to grab pre-packaged snack foods.  The problem is that more times than not processed, prepackaged, low calorie snack packs are pure junk!  Just because something is low in calories and portioned out does not mean that it’s a nutritious, healthy choice.  Honestly a lot of the 100-calorie packs you see are packed with sugars and unhealthy fats (they’re just in smaller portions).

If you can manage to read the ingredients in this picture without wearing sunglasses you'll see ingredients like: high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, and enriched flour (which basically means white flour). So while it is portion controlled and I'm sure very tasty, there ain't nothing healthy about it!
*Remember, the key to good nutrition is eating whole, natural, unprocessed foods most of the time.

So I figured that while I’m trying to come up with some quick, nutritious snacks to pack into my cooler this month I would share some of alternative options* with you!

100-ish Calorie Snack Pack Alternatives
* ½ cups of low-fat/no-fat cottage cheese mixed with berries
* 2 Wasa crackers topped with 2 oz of sliced turkey
* Celery stuffed with 2 tsp of natural peanut butter and a few raisins
* One entire container of Egg White Salad from Trader Joes
* ¼ cup of hummus with raw veggies (as many veggies as you please)
* Tall Skim latte
* 1 cup of no-fat plain Greek yogurt with a squish of honey and a few walnuts
* 1 small whole grain tortilla with 2 oz of part skim cheese and a little salsa (think quick quesadilla)
* A cookie – C’mon now, one cookie will never hurt (you know it’s the whole sleeve that gets you in trouble;))
* 1 graham cracker topped with a marshmallow and a squish of chocolate syrup
* A small handful of almonds
* 2 hard boiled egg whites stuffed with hummus (no yolk)
* My banana boat
* ¼ cup Part skim ricotta cheese mixed with 1 tbsp of cocoa powder and a squish of agave syrup (tastes like cheesecake)
* ½ cup of fiber one w/ ½ cup of skim milk and a few berries

*All of these snacks are about 100-150 calories each

So that's a quick list of some go-to snacks I find myself turning to.
Do you guys have any snacks that you can add??? I'm always looking for some new clean, simple and d'lishes ideas!

i LOVE LOVE LOVE the foodshouldtastegood multigrain chips!! http://www.foodshouldtastegood.com/portfolio_multigrain.asp. like it says, no transfats, kosher, non gmo, low sodium, good source of fiber, gluten free, no cholesterol, no artificial flavors/colors/preservatives with TONS of grains. they taste ok by themselves, but it tends to taste bland after a couple bites. i always eat mine with a spicy salsa. i've gotten all my friends addicted to them!!

Connie - Yum...sounds good. I'll have to check them out!

Christine Wight :

these look wonderful and, I'm a no wheat or dairy type. I need some fun ways to snack. I'm eating way too many nuts! Hummus on the Wasa crackers is great too. I'll think over some of my other successes, but some of the above are a great surprise for an old mind set! Thanks!

Hey Dani! First time visitor! I love your blog! And is your last name really "Spies"? Haha I think that it so cool! Anyways...yeah they are full of junk...I had a Doritos 100 cal pack the other day that I grabbed from a friend...simply because it was a) free, and b) I didn't prepare enough healthy snacks and I love how they say 0g Trans Fat but then have hydrog. oils in the ingred. list. As though the fact that it's not quite 0g is good enough!

And I had no idea Trader Joe's made an Egg White salad...im going to have to look for that!

Love the blog! And thanks for the tips ! :)

Christine - Hummus is a great snack, especially if you don't do wheat or dairy. Have you ever tries Ezekiel products?

Em - Well, thanks for stopping by! My last name is really Spies but it is pronounced "Speas". As for the No trans fat labels, I hear ya... and it's just wrong. You really have to try the egg white salad; it's good and it comes in different flavors!

I kept seeing the SoyJoy commercials on television and finally was able to give them a try this week. They have about 140 calories and they look very small, but they are really satisfying...all natural soy + fruit. I especially enjoyed mango coconut.

Megan - I've never heard of SoyJoy, I'll have to keep my eye out for them.

Oh my gosh...I couldn't agree with this more!

Jennifer :

Joseph's mini Flax, Oat Bran & Whole Wheat Flour Pita Bread are 45 cal (I think they have 3 g fiber and 4 g protein) with 1 wedge Laughing Cow Light Swiss cheese (35 cal)....a very satiating 80 cal snack!
