Irish Soda Bread - Video

*Updated

This is not a new recipe but it is my favorite when it comes to Irish Soda Bread!

But let me pre-warn you, I like my Irish Soda Bread on the "drier" side... kinda like a big fat scone.  So if you like a more cake like, moist soda bread, this is not the recipe for you.  On the flip side, if you like a more scone like soda bread, get out your bowl and get to work because this IS the recipe for you!

Happy St. Patty's Day!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

2007
Back in Jersey, every St. Patty's Day we would somehow end up with loaves and loaves of Irish Soda Bread in our kitchen. It seemed everyone on the block would be comparing and contrasting different recipes in order to come up with the perfect combination, and of course, what better way to test your recipes then on your neighbors!

So, after years of trial and error I have settled on a what has come to be my favorite recipe for Irish Soda Bread... it comes from a family I grew up with, and I simply added in some of my healthier substitutions. This recipe has the perfect hint of sweetness, with a dry texture embodied with plump, golden, raisins and crunchy caraway seeds, just the way I like it! Try toasting it up with a light spread of butter...yum!!

1⁄2 cup golden raisins
2 tsp of caraway seeds
3⁄4 cup of low fat buttermilk
2 tbsp of melted butter

Garnish: Dust with flour

Directions

Preheat oven to 350.

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl. Stir in raisins and caraway seeds.

Stir in buttermilk and butter until the dough is evenly moist. The dough will be sticky and wet.

On a cookie sheet that is sprayed with a little non stick spray, plop your dough right in the center shape into a disk.

Bake for 35 minutes. Cool and dust with a little flour!

Hey Dani,
Love your new site. Waiting for another recipe instalment. Hope all is well!

Nice video. I just tried making an Irish soda bread and it was pretty good. The next time I make it I will be adding some raisins and caraway seeds.

Kevin - Oh yeah...you gotta have the raisins and caraway seeds;).
