The PB&B Sandwich - The Ultimate Snack Food
A few simple ways of over simplifying healthy eating:
1. Base your diet on veggies, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats.
2. Stick to whole, real, unprocessed foods most of the time.
3. Eat foods that are closest to their natural state.
If we all could slow down, stop counting calories, listen to our bodies, and apply these simple tips, we’d be headed well in the right direction. (Why do we like to make things so complicated, anyhow?!)
It seems that fast foods on the go is something everyone is looking for these days. What are good snack choices when we’re on the run or stuck at the office? This is probably the number one question that I get from my clients these days. So I share with you one of my favorite options… A good old-fashioned whole grain piece of bread with some natural peanut butter (or any nut butter) and banana. I mean really, it doesn’t get much “less-complicated” then that.
Top 10 reasons why the Peanut Butter Banana Sandwich is the perfect on the go snack:
1. It takes all of sixty seconds to make
2. It works for breakfast, lunch or snack time
3. It travels well (it can be left in the car a few hours and still be d’lishes)
4. It’s a great partner for an afternoon skim latte
5. You can easily leave a loaf of whole grain bread and a jar of natural peanut butter at the office so you’re never caught face to face on an empty stomach staring down the vending machines
6. It’s a great balance of carbs, protein and fat that gives you lots of energy
7. It’s an all natural, real food snack or mini-meal
8. It will hold you over longer than any of the kicked-up candy bars we like to call “energy” bars
9. It’s supplies a great dose of fiber (5.5 g… and you know how I feel about fiber)
10. It’s G-damn d’lishes!
See… so easy, so d’lishes, so nutritious and so NOT complicated. A fast snack food that we can all feel good about eating!
The only things to keep in mind when building your sandwich are that:
A. You are using a good, whole grain bread (Ezekiel is my hands down favorite bread, but by all means use what you love).
B. You use an all-natural nut butter. So, if you are using peanut butter the ingredients should only list peanuts and maybe salt… but that’s it. So no Jiffy or Skippy peanut butter allowed.
Since simple snack ideas seem to be a much-desired topic these days, I’ll be posting some more from now on but in the mean time… what are some of your favorite go-to-quick-whole-food snacks? Any new ideas out there??

Dani: Most of the time, I crave for something crunchy. Instead of a bag of chips or the like, I bring along a baggie of cereal--Nature Path's Optimum Power Breakfast. The pieces are not too small nor too big and I use my fingers to put the cereal in my mouth so I get the same satisfaction as if I was eating chips and the satisfying crunch I need. I eat that with my cup of afternoon Peet's coffee.

Hi Dani,
This is one of my favs, but to make it an on the go thing (I'm not a morning person so I am guilty of eating breakfast in the car on the way to work), I take a whole wheat or rice tortilla, lay the banana down, peanut butter it up, and roll. MMM.
If I'm out of peanut butter (heaven forbid!) I also love a wrap with a banana, cinnamon, raisins, and pecans (I smush the banana a bit so the pecans and raisins will hold).
I also love dipping babby carrots or snap peas in peanut butter. mmmmm.

My fave on the go snack is a white chedder rice or soy cake topped with a tablespoon or two of salsa, very low cal and so tasty.

Krista - Love the rolled tortilla idea... great for on-the-go!
Nicole - Never tried this combo, sound like a good one. Almost like a rice cake pizza or something... I'll be giving it a try for sure, thanks.

So funny, because I posted about making a pb&b sandwich a few weeks ago, but it certainly was not the healthy kind. Good to hear that when you go with the more natural version it is a perfectly healthy snack as nothing is more satisfying than bananas and pb. I usually skip the bread and just smear the pb on the banana. Hard pretzels have been my snack of choice lately.

I've had peanut butter sandwiches. I've had bananas dipped in peanut butter. Why didn't I think of combining it all together!! Excellent!
I've been eating natural PB for the last couple of years. Now, I don't even like the taste of regular PB. Natural is awesome!

You just wrote about one of my all-time favorite snacks. I like to toast the bread and have this as a morning meal.
Another great way to have peanut butter and banana? In some vanilla ice cream. That makes a great dessert, especially if you get the really good vanilla ice cream that lists only three or four ingredients: cream, sugar, eggs, vanilla bean.

This is one of my FAVs! I seriously used to eat it for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner.......hahahah
But, have you tried the Krema peanut butters? They are just made from peanuts, nothing else. They have crunchy and creamy versions too. It's my favvvv cause there's no added sugar, salt, oil, anything, but it still tastes awesome. :)

hi, i would like to know if i should toast the bread? Does it taste better toasted or un-toasted??!

culinary wannabe - How about hard pretzels and peanut butter... yum!
Lance - I'm with you... I can't even eat the processed peanut butters any more, they just don't taste good.
Erin - Peanut butter and bananas in vanilla ice cream?? Whoa, now you're talking my language:). That's sounds insane!
Mellaina - I'm loving the almond butter too... any nut butter works for me. Thanks for sharing:).
Bev - LOL!!
Kaman - Haven't tried Krema (I'm assuming it's a brand). I usually end up with the natural PB from Trader Joe's or Raulphs. I'll have to keep my eyes open for it.
MizFit - Love that you love it!
Lex - I love the bread toasted but I guess it's a personal preference. Certainly you can do it either way.

Okay this sounds more like the perfect diet / life style plan to me. Wondered where those extra pounds came from... easy, being busy makes it so convenient to go out and eat. After which I usually feel like I have just taken a bite off my life span.
When I had more time (or felt that I did) I always ate this way. Your blog has been great for recipes and encouraging steps back to a healthier lifestyle :)
Thanks and keep 'em coming.
