Is it just me...

Or is it absolutely necessary to have a garage if you want to shop at Costco?

About a year ago a few friends of ours convinced my husband and I to get a membership to Costco.  We decided to go for it but haven't really been back since.  So last night we decided it would be fun to go and stock up on some things before the baby pops out (oh the wild and crazy nights of an expecting couple!).

When we first walked into the store I felt like a kid in a candy shop... it's SO BIG and they seem to have just about everything!  Oh boy, this was gonna be fun!

As we started walking up and down the aisles we began to fill our cart wit basic necessities... a few gallons of mouth wash, an eight pack of dental floss, a life time supply of toilet paper, you know... things like that.

Then we got to the food section (now I was getting really excited).  I was actually really surprised at the amount of organic options they had (for some reason I wasn't anticipating they would carry organic products).

Now, I'm not usually a "freezer" person, but I figured with a baby on the way, this might be a good time to start.  We added pounds of organic chicken breasts and thighs to the cart, wild salmon burgers, and even some frozen codfish.  We thought, "hey, we won't need to leave the house for months once this baby comes!"

Then we were off to the dried goods, but not before I was able to toss a pineapple into he cart (for 2.99 I just couldn't resist).  We added nuts, cereals, dried fruits, and beverages, to our cart.  At one point my husband even tossed in some nutty, fruity granola-like bites that they were sampling.  The only catch is you had to buy four bags... so four bags it was, right into our cart!

As we rounded out near the register my husband and I started to crack up because we were like, "what are we going to do with all of this stuff not to mention where in the hell are we going to put all of this stuff!?  Seriously.  We live in a condo.

So what did we do?!  We pulled out anything that we took from the frozen section, put it back and abandoned ship.  Yep.  We were those people.  Left the cart rights there in the store and took off.

As we were walking out we remembered why we hadn't been back to Costco since we got our membership... ay yay yay!

So tell me...
Is it just me or do you  HAVE to have a garage to shop at Costco?!

Naomi from Yokohama, Japan :

Hi Dani,

Congrat on soon-to-be mom :)
Omedetou gozaimasu !! (in Japanese)

About Costco, my husband loves to go there but I've been thinking about exactly same thing as you.
We need huge strage room in order to keep the stuff from there.
And also We are living in an apartment in the city, no kids just a couple, no space for keep huge container of liquid soup or a dozen of 2 liters bottle of Fruits juice. .................
You can not imagine that how small our living space and frige.
(Yokohama is suburb of Tokyo and 20min to get there.)
Costco is famous and popular among housewives who have space for keep in Japan tho.

Looking forward to hear your baby news and see your next lovely recipes.

Naomi

I just found your website and I LOVE it!!! Excellent work. :) I too have a BA (and a MA) in psychology but I am no longer in the field. I made the transition into health because I have such a bigger passion for it. Anyways thanks for the great site! I will continue to come back. :)

Yes, you do need a garage or a dry basement if you shop at Costco, Sam's Club or BJ's Wholesalers! I'm fortunate that I do have space, however, one must be careful--you don't always save when buying bulk! Honestly, I mostly buy the single serve frozen wild salmon fillets, frozen berries, chicken breasts, paper towels and toilet paper!! Those are the items that are more cost beneficial at the wholesale club for my family.

Best wishes for a healthy delivery--which is soon I believe!

Just wait -- Costco and Sam's are the best for diapers and wipes. You'll need tons of those. Once we started our family we found Sam's to be the best place to get fruits and veggies, chicken, diapers, wipes, etc. If you are feeding more than 2 it can be quite helpful.

Yes, blast it all, you have to have a garage! You won't find a Costco in the middle of the city..they start to pop up along the city's edges where there are more neighborhoods of single family homes. My mom (who lives in the suburbs) is obsessed with the store and wouldn't you know it? They have to park on the driveway because there's no room in their 3-car garage!
P.S. I love your site!

I love Costco. We call it the $300 store. You can use an extra bedroom or stuff boxes under your bed if your kitchen is to small. Some things are really such a bargain that my kitchen is full of Costco stuff. I buy the organic spinach, organic spring mix (salad greens) and fresh blueberries every week. When I buy the pineapple I let it sit on it's side until it is golden then it is really sweet. I get Golden Yukon Potatoes there and sweet onions.
They have hummus and organic salsa, and this mango salsa that is wonderful. They also have organic corn chips and multi grain chips. Lots of great deals on pine nuts, almonds, pecans, walnuts and even breakfast bars that are actually healthy. (read the labels) I like their Trio bars.
My all time favorite though is their mango and jalapeno chicken sausages by aidells without msg or nitrites. They are to die for and even have no added fat. I by frozen blueberries that I mix with yogurt and stevia from the health food store, so it tastes like ice cream and I buy the fresh blueberries there too. They have a good selection of organic cereals. Their tomatoes are pesticide free. Sometimes they have organic Braeburn apples and peaches and I buy bananas and avocadoes there even though they aren't organic because they aren't on the high pesticide, dirty dozen list and the savings is so good. They even have organic Ceasar salad mix. They have Aspen Mills whole wheat bread that is wonderful and half the price of regular stores.
I eat a lot of raw stuff so it's nice that the store is only a block away from my house. I have to take a list though or I might come home with that years supply of toilet paper. We have a Sam's club card too and they do not have the organic stuff like Costco. You just have to take the time to get to know Costco. And have the self control not to try every sample.
My brother has ten kids and I swear that when the kids were little it was a family outing to take them there on Saturdays so they could basically eat lunch there and then go to the park. (I guess that's one way to save money there. LOL)
I love this site too.
