My First Visit To A Farm!!

That's Beng (my husband) getting some footage inside the green house.

Hollandia Produce in Capinteria, CA (1 ½ hours north of LA) produces a series of products under a brand called, “Live Gourmet”
that includes butter lettuce, watercress, and a three- in-one lettuce.  You guys may recognize them, they’re the lettuce you see in the store that is still attached to the root and comes in its own little green house (they call it a clam shell). If you haven’t seen it you can check it out here

Anyhow, they want to create some videos to help their consumers find quick and simple ways to incorporate these products into their kitchens!  So a few weeks back Vince, the marketing director over at Hollandia Produce, called my husband and I to see if we would be interested in shooting some videos featuring their products to help spread the word.

Would I be interested?  Uh...Yeah...interested and completely flattered!  I mean, shooting videos about incorporating nutritious ingredients into an everyday kitchen is right up my alley, but having the opportunity to create videos for a real live farm with fresh healthy produce, well that’s just a whole other super-exciting story to me!

So, Saturday morning my husband and I headed up North for the V.I.P. tour of the farm.  Now, living in Los Angeles I’m lucky enough to go to some of the best farmers markets in the country, BUT this was my first visit to a real life farm!  And I gotta tell you, it was SO cool!  Vince showed us the entire process from when the seeds are being planted to harvest to packing it up and shipping it out.  I mean it’s one thing to see your produce once it’s at the grocery store but to actually go to the farm and witness all of the labor that goes into each piece of lettuce…I don’t know, it just gave me a whole new appreciation for it.

Over at Hollandia Produce they grow their lettuce in a greenhouse using no pesticides, it’s a completely natural process which was another thing that I was happy to know.

baby butter lettuceAs we were leaving the farm, Vince sent us off with a bunch of fresh produce (which I have no idea how my husband fit into the fridge).  I have a fridge full of butter lettuce, watercress, and a three in one mix green lettuce that I get to experiment with all week. It's funny because I was just reading an article on the benefits of phytonutrients and I’ve been day dreaming about fun things to do with leafy greens all day…. seems now I have the perfect opportunity to play!

Anyhow I’ll keep you guys posted on the video situation and once we have all the details set up and we shoot it, I’ll post it here at danispies.com as well!   Hmm, I think I smell another food focus coming up;)!
